Hydrogen 101: Opportunities for Hydrogen in BC’s Mainland/Southwest Region

Foresight, in partnership with the BC Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Low Carbon Innovation’s Clean Energy and Major Projects Office (CEMPO), is offering First Nations, municipalities, regional districts, youth, and community organizations in BC’s Mainland/Southwest region an opportunity to learn about the potential roles for hydrogen in BC and share perspectives on the future of a Lower Mainland Hydrogen Hub.

A key challenge facing hydrogen development in BC is matching supply and demand. Regional hydrogen hubs, as outlined in the BC Hydrogen Strategy, can overcome this challenge by co-locating hydrogen production and end-use applications while accelerating the growth of the local economy.

The Lower Mainland, Northeast BC, Interior BC (Kootenays and Okanagan), and Vancouver Island were identified as key economic regions where hydrogen projects are developing and where hydrogen hubs could develop. This workshop is part of a series of engagements across the province that will seek to grow awareness of hydrogen and collect community perspectives on its role in BC’s low-carbon energy future.

The workshop will feature facilitated discussions and interactive exercises to understand and collect participant feedback. The session will begin with a “Hydrogen 101” presentation, where presenters will share background information on hydrogen, including some of the potential uses and roles of hydrogen in BC, and respond to participant questions. This will be followed by interactive poll questions and opportunities for participants to share their feedback with organizers in breakout rooms.
