LANDFILL DIVERSION & WATER EFFICIENCY

Grupo Industrial Saltillo (GIS) is a Mexican manufacturing company that was founded in 1928. It has been publicly listed since 1976. GIS has offices in six countries and over 8,000 employees. GIS has two challenges for Canadian innovators to tackle:

First, the GIS waste challenge seeks an efficient means of separating out and retaining valuable materials from GIS waste streams, leaving the other elements to be managed and disposed of safely. Key materials include silica sand, bentonite and marine coal.

Second, a substantial amount of water is used during production of GIS ceramics. The outgoing water currently goes through a pre-treatment before being transported to a municipal treatment plant. There is an opportunity to reduce or recycle this wastewater.
