Seizing the Agtech Opportunity

Canada has an opportunity through cleantech innovation to increase food production and resiliency, and to reduce and even reverse waste and emissions. This will improve income across the value chain and enhance our competitive positioning in the $4 trillion global agriculture market, while supporting growth of our cleantech sector.

In the face of population growth, changing consumer preferences, declining available arable land, and growing climatic uncertainty and opportunity, innovation is an urgent imperative.

Catalyzing Canadian Agriculture Innovation

Foresight and Founding Partner Natural Products Canada (NPC) have launched agriNEXT, a sector-specific accelerator and network hub. Building on the successful waterNEXT, energyNEXT, and carbonNEXT initiatives, agriNEXT accelerates sector-focused innovators by providing technology- and industry-specific training, mentorship, and ecosystem engagement.

AgriNEXT’s unique approach to programming and network building establishes a supportive environment that accommodates the longer development cycles for cleantech, and the need for technology and sector-specific knowledge. This sector-specific complement to our core programming will yield better results than peer programs that are broad-based or that are run for a specific group of investors or corporate buyers.

Accelerating the Growth of Agtech in Canada

AgriNEXT leverages Foresight’s strengths as Canada’s leading cleantech accelerator with the largest pipeline of relevant ventures in Canada and deep ties across the innovation community, to lead an ecosystem that accelerates the scale-up and adoption of Canada’s agtech companies.

AgriNEXT activities include:

What’s Next for agriNEXT

In consultation with a growing roster of current and potential partners including Founding Partner NPC, THRIVE SVG, CDL Rockies, Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG), and the Smart Farm at Olds College, our initial plans are:

  1. Sector-Specific Acceleration  – Develop and launch agriculture-specific training and recruit relevant mentors to support a cohort of 8-10 agtech-focused ventures from across Canada in April 2022.
  2. Ecosystem Alignment and Capacity Building – Build out the network of partners, clarify roles and responsibilities, identify the specific challenges and opportunities facing the agriculture sector in Canada, and establish a regular cadence of network-building events, deal flow, and showcase opportunities for the ventures.
