Who we are

Barkley Project Group (BPG) is a small consulting firm specializing in project management services for developing community-owned clean energy projects and implementing energy efficiency initiatives. We currently work with more than 30 First Nations communities within British Columbia and the Yukon. Our job is to support Nations by providing project management and administration capacities on a project-specific basis. We are passionate about the work we do, and we are grateful for the opportunities to work with the communities pursuing a more sustainable future.

We focus on a community-centric approach where our clients own and control their clean energy developments and energy efficiency projects. We also have a solid understanding and track record of securing government funding to support project development. Our most important guiding principle is to ensure that project benefits align with community priorities. This approach has been well received by government funders which in turn, reduces financial risks for our clients. Job Summary

We are hiring a 35 hours per week, temporary, position of Communications Assistant (Student) with our Project Development Team at a rate of $23/hr. This position is for 10 weeks starting June 22nd until August 31st 2021. The successful candidate must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment due to Canada Summer Jobs funding requirements. This is a remote work opportunity with the potential for in-person support at our Nanaimo office. It is expected that the successful applicant will work during core business hours (10 am – 3 pm) and meet weekly requirements.

The Communications Assistant is responsible for developing and posting content on Barkley Project Group’s website and social media channels. This role includes creating content that showcases Indigenous leadership in renewable energy. In addition, a core objective of this role is to implement creative storytelling campaigns for Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Throughout this process, these campaigns will deepen the Communication Assistants’ understanding of clean energy projects. Barkley Project Group currently offers services in hydropower, solar power, wind power, biomass, geothermal, marine energy, and energy efficiency.  Beyond social media, this role also includes updating content on Barkley Project Group’s website.

Key Function Tasks:

  • Execute Barkley Project Group’s Communications & Marketing Strategy
  • Create graphics via Canva for social media channels, including LinkedIn, Facebook & Instagram
  • Develop content that features renewable energy project successes
  • Write copy for social media and website updates
  • Open to exploring different forms of storytelling that utilize imagery, graphics, writing, video, and/or audio
  • Research content
  • Generate social media reports
  • Update the project library for Barkley Project Group’s website
  • Work closely with Barkley Project Group’s Development Team to ensure that the website and social media correctly reflect activities
  • By request, assisting with content for event promotion
  • Work collaboratively with our clients and other partners, including industry associations and non-profit organizations

  • Communicate factual information in written stories
  • Maintain precise records of the tasks, activities, and details of your work
  • Contribute ideas, energy and personal commitment to help foster a positive and rewarding work environment and to help maintain and grow a successful, innovative, high-quality project management consulting practice at Barkley Project Group
  • Attend meetings as requested

  • Have a genuine interest and passion for working in the clean energy and energy efficiency industry
  • Bring a good sense of humour
  • Must maintain a valid BC driver’s license
  • Legally able to work in Canada
  • Due to funding requirements the successful candidate must be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act

Qualifications

Skills & Abilities:

Education: Pursing a degree or certificate in one of the following areas– Communications, Marketing, Applied Science, Engineering, Renewable Energy or related field

Experience:

  • Previous experience with Canva is an asset, but a willingness to learn is key
  • Previous experience managing social media channels is an asset
  • Previous experience utilizing WordPress is an asset

Contract length: 10 weeks
