Case Study

Decarbonizing BC’s Mining Sector

Through the BC Net Zero Innovation Network (BCNZIN), Foresight convened a Working Group comprising decision-makers from over 15 BC mines and mining development projects, the provincial government, BC Hydro, and industry associations. Together, they modelled solutions to tackle shared decarbonization challenges, driving the sector toward sustainable mining.

The Working Group identified:

  • Nearly 2X power demand would be required for the sector to electrify all mines in BC by 2030.
  • 2.6M tCO2e potential greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions for the province through mine electrification by 2035.

It is exciting and inspiring to see the number of innovative ideas and technologies being pursued to help achieve emission reduction efforts through the use of CCUS.

Regional Case Study: The BC Net Zero Innovation Network

How We Turned $7.5M into $154M

In 2022, Foresight launched the BC Net Zero Innovation Network (BCNZIN) with a foundational $7.5M from Pacific Economic Development Canada and the provincial Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation. We convened sectoral clusters within British Columbia’s core industries—mining, water, forest bioeconomy, and transportation—and launched sub-sector Working Groups to focus on unique challenges, share resources, and accelerate impact.

The initial investment yielded a return of $154M in combined new revenue and private investment, alongside substantial job creation and export opportunities. The program developed an Innovation Network model that is simple, powerful, and universally adaptable across Canada.

We turned the foundational BCNZIN investment into:
