Case Study

Groupe Savoie Biomass Recovery Challenge

The Challenge: Groupe Savoie and the New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) sought innovative solutions to optimize biomass utilization, improve resource efficiency, and reduce forestry waste.

The Solution: Northern Hardwoods Research Institute (NHRI) was selected as the winner for its advanced forestry modelling system. Their technology utilizes remote sensing and geospatial data to predict biomass availability and model operational costs, enabling Groupe Savoie to optimize how and where it harvests.

With their pilot opportunity, NHRI is advancing its predictive models to forecast biomass value and optimize harvesting operations.

The Outcomes:

15% Cost Reduction

Preliminary data shows a significant drop in operational expenses through optimized harvesting.

Operational Efficiency

Upgraded equipment and larger bunk capacities have increased biomass volume per trip while lowering fuel consumption.

Scalable Innovation

NHRI is expanding the model’s applications to include wildfire fuel modeling and industry-wide “best practice” standards.

Commercial Momentum

The pilot has accelerated NHRI’s path to becoming a leading solution provider in precision forestry.

Carbon Management

Canada’s Carbon Management Ecosystem

Reaching net zero is a generational challenge, requiring a fundamental transformation of all industrial processes that power our global economy. Estimations state we need 2 to 10 gigatonnes of carbon (CO2) capture and 7 to 9 gigatonnes of carbon removal annually to reach net zero. Over half of the carbon management technologies needed are not yet commercially ready.

With the nation’s largest pipeline of emerging carbon management solutions, we accelerate the path to commercialization and help industries adopt high-performance technologies that drive emissions reduction while protecting the bottom line.

Carbon Management Focus Areas:

1

Carbon Capture, Utilization, & Storage

2

Carbon Removal Technologies

3

Measurement, Reporting, & Verification

4

Digital Enablement & Supportive Technologies

Mission

Our goal is to catalyze the advancement of carbon management solutions that will reduce 100 MT of GHG emissions by 2030.

[Foresight's carbon programming] plays a vital connecting and convening role in the emerging Canadian CDR ecosystem. Our participation has enabled Arca to make sense of our position in that ecosystem, and contribute and learn.
