March 28, 2022: In December 2021, Foresight Canada and the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) launched the Mining Innovation Challenge: Reducing Water Use. The Challenge seeks solutions to reduce water use intensity in mining operations, and offers the winning solution a $150,000 prize and potential for a pilot opportunity.

The competition received over 25 applications which were reviewed by a panel of experts with extensive experience in the mining industry. After a rigorous evaluation process, the following five companies have been selected to move to the Full Project Proposal stage of the competition:

The second stage of the competition opens on April 1, 2022 and closes on May 12, 2022, when finalists will submit detailed project proposals about their technologies. The winning solution will be announced at the end of June 2022.

“Industry Challenges are a fantastic way to energize innovation,” said Jeanette Jackson, CEO of Foresight, Canada’s cleantech accelerator. “By connecting corporate leaders facing sustainability hurdles with market-ready cleantech innovators, we can accelerate Canada’s path to a green economy. Solutions for this Challenge could have enormous environmental and economic benefits.”

“BC’s mines are committed to continuous improvement, and the Mining Innovation Challenge is another example of how we are always looking for new technologies that can enhance our operations and environmental stewardship,” said Michael Goehring, President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia. “The Challenge attracted applications from BC and around the world, and we are very pleased to be moving forward with five high quality candidates to the final stage of the competition.”
