About CMPC

CMPC produces and commercializes products based on pulp, paper, wood, and tissue.

The company was established in 1920 with the production of papers and cardboard. Today, it commercializes its products through its three main businesses —Pulp, Biopackaging, and Softys (tissue products)—, reaching more than 26.700 direct clients around the world.

CMPC’s corporate purpose —create, coexist, and conserve—, called 3C, is integral to the company’s way of doing business and guides its actions and operations towards a sustainable future on a day-to-day basis.

Challenge Background

As a global leader part of a new era that challenges companies to move from a linear to a circular economy, CMPC acknowledges the importance of optimizing its processes.

As a result of the separation of solids in the clarifiers, a primary sludge, rich in cellulose fibers, and a secondary sludge, rich in biological matter, are generated. This challenge will allow CMPC to be more efficient in treating sludge and recovering high-potential materials by increasing its percentage of solids.

The Circular Economy Opportunity

There is an opportunity to recover fiber from the primary sludge. For this, a dehydration system is sought that allows reaching a dryness of 50% or higher (currently at 30%), and whose final format is manipulable, such as bales or briquettes.

In the same way, an alternative is sought for the dehydration of the secondary sludge, which allows it to reach 70% dry in bulk format (currently 10%).

Shortlisted challenge applicants will have the opportunity to pitch to CMPC. From that shortlist, the challenge winner(s) will be selected to potentially co-create a technology pilot with CMPC.

Desired Outcomes & Eligibility

The Pulp Mill Sludge Efficiency Challenge is focused on innovative solutions to recover fibers from the waste water sludges produced during CMPC’s manufacturing process. They are seeking a dehydration system to:

  1. Reach 50% of dryness or higher for the primary sludge, in bales or briquettes format
  2. Reach 70% or higher for secondary sludge, in bulk format

Eligible ventures will be TRL 6 or above.
