New Sustainable Forestry Challenge Launched with CMPC and Foresight

Announcement
May 13, 2024

May 13, 2024: CMPC, one of the leading global pulp and paper companies, in collaboration with Foresight Canada, is seeking innovative solutions to further refine their harvesting and transport operations through the CMPC Understanding Our Trees Challenge. This innovation challenge aims to set the new standard for the way moisture and density are measured for trees, logs, chips, and biomass, aiming to drive sustainability and efficiency in forestry practices.

Understanding the moisture content of trees and logs allows pulp and paper manufacturers like CMPC to make better decisions about wood supply, from forests to mills. Improving moisture and density measurement capabilities will further refine CMPC’s harvesting and transport operations, which are key to a more efficient and sustainable pulp and paper manufacturing process.

With 54 industrial plants spanning 9 countries, CMPC recognizes the critical importance of accurately assessing wood moisture content and density throughout the supply chain.

Commitment to sustainability and preserving the environment defines CMPC. As a global leader, we are part of a new era that challenges companies and citizens to move from a linear to a circular economy. We already are a referent in the Pulp & Paper sector, but we want to do more. This challenge will allow us to make better decisions regarding our wood supply, further refining our harvesting and transport operations. Accurately measuring wood’s moisture and density is critical to an even more efficient and sustainable pulp and paper manufacturing process. We are looking forward to seeing the proposed solutions that will bring us closer to our 2030 strategic goals.

Sebastián Corthorn Open Innovation Leader, CMPC

"The Understanding Our Trees challenge with CMPC is a reminder of the profound impact innovation can have on shaping a more profitable, competitive, and sustainable future for our vital industries and planet. At Foresight, we believe in the power of partnership and technology to drive positive change. By connecting innovators and industry leaders like CMPC, we can drive more efficient and environmentally-conscious forestry practices. Together, we are charting a course towards a more resilient future for generations to come."

Jeanette Jackson Chief Executive Officer, Foresight Canada

CMPC Understanding Our Trees Challenge invites innovators to submit solutions that can accurately measure moisture with less than 5% error, reduce log rejections in wood mills, and decrease CO2e emissions during log transportation. Successful solutions will be invited to present a pilot proposal to CMPC, with the potential to scale across all CMPC productions.

Ideal solutions should be cost-competitive, scalable across CMPC productions, mobile for use in forest environments, resistant to various climate conditions, and capable of data connectivity through cloud-based systems.
