Problem
Untreated biomass emits large amounts of carbon dioxide and methane, contributing to climate change.
Solution
NULIFE GreenTech's technology converts both wet and dry biomass waste streams into a sustainable bio-oil while permanently eliminating GHG emissions.
Through their innovative, patented technology, NULIFE GreenTech is transforming how we think about waste and approach the climate crisis.
In a world racing to meet climate goals, the need for breakthrough carbon removal solutions has never been more urgent. One of the most exciting examples of this innovation is happening right now in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
NULIFE GreenTech, a three-time Foresight 50 honouree founded in 2016, uses a cutting-edge, patented process called Hydrothermal Liquefaction (HTL) to convert both wet and dry biomass waste streams into a sustainable bio-oil. This oil is injected into underground geological formations for permanent carbon removal. This isn’t theoretical, it’s operational.
NULIFE’s process goes even further by sequestering harmful contaminants like Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS or “forever chemicals”) and industrial toxins, tackling multiple environmental challenges at once. It also generates co-product revenue streams, such as biogenic CO₂, adding resilience to the business model and opening up future opportunities in renewable fuels. In fact, earlier this year, they upgraded their bio-oil into drop-in renewable diesel at a yield conversion of 93%!

Collaboration for Growth
This kind of circular, scalable solution is what the climate innovation ecosystem is all about. With support from Foresight Canada’s Bioeconomy and Acceleration programs, including Earth Tech: 2050, NULIFE has refined its approach, built critical industry connections, and scaled its impact. Foresight’s programs are designed to help companies like NULIFE accelerate from promising concept to full commercial readiness, and we’re proud to have played a part in its journey.
Today, NULIFE has successfully commissioned its first facility, is actively expanding its processing capacity, and has attracted global recognition. They were recently selected by Frontier, a $1B advance market commitment led by Stripe, Alphabet Inc., Shopify, Meta, and McKinsey Sustainability, to support the most promising carbon removal startups. Being part of Frontier’s 2024 pre-purchase cycle marks a significant step forward not just for NULIFE, but for Canadian climate tech leadership. The pre-purchase makes it possible to secure much larger carbon dioxide removal (CDR) commitments.
Foresight has been a tremendous support through NULIFE’s transformation from a true ‘startup’ and finding our product market fit to now as we scale commercially. Foresight and its fabulous program leaders have brought enormous value along the way; most recently via their Earth Tech: 2050 program led by Brittany Goldhawke. This program helped us extract the full value from underutilized agricultural residues and enhance Canada’s bioeconomy. Thank you Foresight!
