The transportation sector is increasingly prioritizing sustainable technologies to drive eco-friendly innovation in transportation systems, leaving opportunity for Canadian ventures to take part in a growing sector. In 2023, EV sales grew by 35% in Canada, supported by Canada's commitment to reach 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035.
Globally, China leads in sustainable transportation patent filings, followed by the United States, South Korea, Japan, and Europe. Canada ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions, with notable patent activity in EV charging infrastructure, low-carbon and zero-emission fuels, and hydrogen technologies. Within Canada, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia lead in patent filings.
To ensure Canada’s competitiveness on the global stage, it is essential to both drive innovation and protect it through strong intellectual property strategies. By examining the patent landscape, we gain deeper insights into how transportation innovation is advancing in Canada and globally.
