To better understand the opportunities and challenges facing the Canada's water sector, Foresight partnered with UnitedLex to develop the Water Technology Landscape Study. Building on insights from our Ventures to Value Chains Report, this study analyzes the global water innovation ecosystem with a focus on Canada’s position within it.
The global water market is expected to grow from USD 302.81 billion in 2022 to USD 430.89 billion by the end of 2030, representing a significant opportunity for Canadian cleantech companies.
Canada boasts some of the world's largest freshwater reserves, along with Brazil, Russia, the United States, and China. Canada also ranks among the top five jurisdictions globally for patent filings across several areas of water technology, with Ontario holding the highest number of patent filings in most areas, followed by British Columbia and Quebec. However, Canada still lags behind other leading jurisdictions in overall water tech patent filings.
To protect Canada's water resources and ensure equitable access, embracing innovation in the water sector is imperative. Equally important is safeguarding these innovations through strong intellectual property strategies to protect our advancements and maintain our competitive edge. One of the ways we can accomplish this is to examine and quantify the patent landscape, giving us a deeper understanding of how innovation is progressing in Canada and globally.
