ECOSYSTEM MAPPING
From Data to Strategy
Ecosystem Mapping turns a chaotic landscape of startups, competitors, customers, and technologies into a clear, navigable “GPS” for your organization or industry. It is one of the most powerful tools available for making informed decisions in fast-moving markets.
For organizations operating in complex sectors such as cleantech, energy, or advanced manufacturing, the sheer volume of players can be overwhelming.
An ecosystem map solves this by visualizing the entire value chain—showing you exactly who is doing what and where the innovation gaps are.
This can help you:
Guide investments and deals
Identify opportunities
Map supply chains
Inform policy changes
Why choose ecosystem mapping?
Our Ecosystem Mapping services provide clients with unique, actionable insights, accelerating the commercialization pathway for cleantech solutions.
Ecosystem mapping helps our clients:
Identify deals and partnerships
Instead of relying on passive deal flow, an ecosystem map gives provides a comprehensive database of potential targets.
For industry: Instantly identify companies that fill a specific technical gap in your operations.
For investors: Spot high-potential ventures early by identifying which innovation.
Identify whitespace opportunities
An ecosystem map highlights what is missing.
Find the gap: If you see 50 companies solving "Problem A" but only two solving "Problem B," you have found a market inefficiency to leverage.
Strategic positioning: Use the map to pivot your R&D or capital toward underserved, high-growth niches.
Visualize supply chain resilience
In emerging sectors, supply chains are often fragmented and immature.
Connect the dots: We map the upstream, midstream, and downstream players—from raw materials to end users—through detailed value chain analysis.
De-risk projects: Ensure you have viable local partners, suppliers, and customers for potential projects, reducing costs associated with supply chain gaps and delays.
Inform policy & regional planning
For public sector clients, an ecosystem map is an evidence-based tool for economic development and resource management.
Prove ROI: Demonstrate that a specific region has the critical mass of talent and companies to justify a new funding program or innovation hub.
Cluster strategy: Move beyond generic support by targeting specific sub-sectors.
Ecosystem Mapping Case Study: Ventures to Value Chains
Our flagship Ventures to Value Chains (V2VC) initiative is an ecosystem mapping study that has resulted in a comprehensive database of over 1,800 categorized companies across 11 sectors, along with 11 accompanying reports, web maps, and unmatched competitive intelligence.

The approach consisted of four steps, designed to transition raw data and over a decade’s worth of know-how from direct venture engagement to actionable strategic intelligence:
1
Value chain mapping charted the Canadian industry value chains for strategically important clean economy sectors.
2
Ecosystem data were collected and assembled from Foresight’s extensive network and proprietary knowledge, as well as in-depth market research.
3
Companies were mapped according to their relevance within the value chain and subjected to in-depth data analysis to identify notable trends.
4
Reports and knowledge sharing highlight sectoral strengths, critical innovation gaps, and strategic commercial opportunities in the cleantech sector.
The reports span multiple key sectors, including the Forest Bioeconomy, Transportation, Mining Technology, and the Built Environment. They identify regional and topical clusters of companies and innovation trends, providing a precise snapshot of the technology ecosystem and offering insights into areas where Canada needs to strengthen its capabilities and capitalize on growth opportunities.
The initiative has also resulted in a one-of-a-kind, proprietary dataset that forms the foundation for all our ecosystem mapping projects, enabling us to consistently deliver superior, competitive intelligence and market insights.
